well to make someone show that they married then divorced someone you would usually have the connecting line and then put a "/" or slash through it. That how i've understood it.....
something like:
person 3 person 1 person 2

|_____________| |---------/--------|
|
child 1 (adopted)

Yes, a slash for divorce seems reasonable. You didn't adress my hypothetical lineage question, though, where child one is the mother of person two  |

so.. move Person 2 to below child 1 (adopted) and have the line that goes to Person 2 from Person 1 Go down to Person 2 with a slash through it. I would make a picture using smiley's but this thing is messed up and doesn't show it properly.  |

Simple enough, just have seperate images basing family tree's per character, then you can make it simpler... Sorta.
