[ yeah still couldn't sleep, I redid the story and here is the first chapter! Enjoy the re-edit]
Winter had a way of sneaking up on you, with its icy breath after the falling of the last amber hued foliage touched the ground and the world became some snow globe of death. Did Gaia cradle us in the palms of her hands, watching us all calm before she shook us into chaos, to fall or trip as snow fell down to the ground? In Ireland where all things where thought to be green and bright, in the mountains of the Highland it was different when winter approached. Everything changed, but even amid the cruel frozen death there was birth to be had. In all this deathly sleep of the emerald Isle there was to be an odd celebration that even the sun was out to witness this miracle of birth.
In the depths of the darken den, a cave deep within a mountain's side where warmth could be had and the ground was dry there laid a gray and white she wolf on her side groaning in pain. Tongue of pink dangling out, panting as the night before had been troubling and the pup was not out yet. She thought she would die here trying to get this pup to come out into the world. Breathing heavily while each contraction hurt worse than the one before, nearly passing out from it but she remained strong, the urgency to bring this child out into the world was weighing heavily over her head as she gave another sharp whimper of pain.
She was not alone though, for within the curve of the cave's mouth there sat a large black wolf male watching over his mate who was giving birth to their pup. He knew it would only be one, but then again he knew many things he had not even told his life mate. Those golden eyes merely watched, mouth closed in the narrow sleek muzzle with ears pricked up while he stood guard over the cave. A sleek furry creature like a stone guardian at the mouth of the cave, tail rested along his side with shoulders up leaning in as if a person watching a movie on the edge of their seat. Claws dug into the ground as at times he would rise going to lick his mate in encouragement then moving to pace back and forth letting his tense body do something than simply watch his chosen mate in such pain. He had watched her in the pack, she stood out to him more than any female to be pure, strong and carry every characteristic he wanted to pass on into a pup of his own. He had an objective that would be completed once this child was born, she was to be the chain that would start it all and finally end the plague of Wyrm.
It was sunset when finally the sound of a pup's whining came to both their ears as the mother, Whitestar (named for the night she was born when the Northstar burned so bright it seemed like a small moon), began licking at the pup though curious as to why it took so long for only one to finally come out. After cleaning the little one, she finally laid on her side fully for a well deserved rest as she looked to her mate who smiled at her. This golden eyes spoke of intelligence, something human that had first scared her when they first met for it was not like wolves to wait and court; it was humans who did. She knew what he was, but the rest of the pack did not and she knew her daughter would be as well. Her daughter was to be something different from any had ever seen.
Whitestar had been alone with Darkness Strikes for 6 weeks as he would hunt, bring her food to keep milk in the pup's belly until she too began teething and soon started to eat meat. After that there was no good-bye, no whimpering to get him to stay for during the night he had gone but never returned to the den. Now 14 years had passed since the little one had been born as she had her father's striking black coat which seemed a piece of darkness. The name the pack had given her was Stargazer, since she was a pup she would sneak out at night to look up at the stars when she could as if she could read them and often saw pictures in the heavens mostly of pack hunting. She had taken no mate though many tried to mount her when she was in heat, she went vicious and soon all males tended to know when not to come around her. Her mother would often ask her to take a mate and start a litter of her own and Stargazer would simply reply, "Oi feel naething fer them but pack mates, Oi nae wish them as me mate there tis too much in this world te simply mate and have pups, eat and sleep. There just has te be more te it."
One night after a hunt that had proven successful with the downfall of an elk she had wandered off once more, she was prone to do and pack no longer worried when she did. That night was to show her there was indeed more to life itself; as she padded along those paths she took like a shadow in the black of night. She had caught the scent of something, often when the scent came her mother and others said to steer clear for they were called humans. Creatures that hunted wolves for their fur, raiding dens and often simply killing them on sight. Creatures that walked on two legs instead of four wearing skins of dead animals since they had no fur of their own and spoke in a strange language that no forest creature knew nor understood. But this time she did not play keep away, instead she began to track them and just see what these humans looked like.
Coming to the edge of a camp she saw tall, pale figures all lounging around an oddly contained rim of fire that didn't leap to the trees. Had they tamed fire? She lingered there, watching, observing the sleeping figures, moving through the foliage, daring to take a step closer to the bodies as she saw a strange piece of metal that held a drink of some odd colored water. Tipping her nose towards it, tongue came out to lap at the liquid for a moment as it stung and yet tasted good. So she began to drink more as she stuck her muzzle into it to reach further down but when she lifted her head up the tin cup would not come off. Was this the traps her pack spoke of? Was she to end up as one of the dead skins on these strange beasts? She grew frightened, stumbling around jerking her head this way and that in utter confusion.
She panicked, lifting paws up to push at it as she sat on her rump and then she felt pain in her gut spread through her whole body. Fire spreading in her veins, she felt her body stretching out, the air around her got so cold while she laid there and her fur seemed to grow longer at the top of her head. Talk about growing pains. Collapsing to her side, as a few other things where knocked over which caused the people to wake. They didn't find a wolf had been there but instead a young adolescent girl with blondish hair down to her waist held one of their tin cups with brandy in it. The men all had women of their own, some even had children like her so none took advantage of her, the gypsy crew simply stood there in puzzlement; only she was shocked at her own change. They seemed to welcome her though and offer her clothing to keep warm, speaking though she understood none of it so they took her for a mute or a deaf but still welcomed her in their little caravan's resting spot.
When all had calmed down, she'd laid to rest, her body relaxed and she reverted back to wolf. She was surprised at the ability, leaping from her spot to go prancing back into the woods while it was her mother standing there looking at her. She seemed sadden and yet mothers knew things before children, having known this day would arrive she still feared such.
"Oi thought Oi told ye young pup, naet te be wandering close te the humans and naew ye rest with them?"
"Oi'm nae a pup any longer, ma. We both knaew that, why did ye never tell me us wolves could change to look like humans? Can we change te be like birds too?"
Nae, just wolf and human, tis an ability of ye father's. Nae the pack leader that tis me mate naew, but ye rightful father."
"Then where is me father?"
"He left after ye were born."
Stargazer had much to think about soon after, gaining very little knowledge from her mother who seemed not to have been told much except she was much different from the rest of the wolves. A merge of wolf and human in one, a link with a special purpose in life not even she understood. So many questions arose in her mind. What was the name for her kind? Where there others? Did they live here in Ireland? Was she a monster? Why was she so different? What was her purpose that her mother said her father spoke of but never explained? Where was her father now and why did he abandon her? She gazed at the moon in its waxing state looming over the world, it seemed to say something, like a clock she couldn't decipher but something was coming. Would she understand it all?
